Abstract
The State Road Patrol was formed under the Arkansas Highway Department in 1929 as the first state law enforcement power in Arkansas. The Road Patrol focused enforcement on proper weight and licensing of commercial vehicles. The duties for the State Road Patrol were transferred to other state agencies, including the Revenue Department and State Police (Weights and Standards Division). The Weights and Standards Division returned to the Highway Department in 1963 and was renamed the Arkansas Highway Police in 1979. The Highway Police increased training in the 1970s and 1980s. The Highway Police adopted additional duties that included federal motor carrier safety inspections, hazardous materials safety, drug interdiction, and speed enforcement.
