Abstract
Early twentieth century tourism in Buffalo National River region is an important link to the beginnings of Arkansas tourism. The Pruitt Historic District provides a window into the development of the rise of autocamps in the early 1920s. This process paper examines why tourists were interested in visiting natural sites such as Shady Grove Camp in Pruitt, Arkansas. To do this I examined the beginnings of tourism in America, and how it evolved up into the mid-twentieth century. This process paper also includes methodology and examination of primary sources used for the project portion. I compiled the results of my research into a brochure of Pruitt Historic District for Buffalo National River. This brochure gives a general background of development of Pruitt and Shady Grove Camp. The use of primary source images help convey the story in a visual manner. Doing so will peak the interest of readers in hopes of leading them to Pruitt Historic District, so they can experience history in real life.
