Abstract
My artwork is my imagination reflected in the trappings of the Victorian era. The Victorian gaze comes from seeing a correlation between the social unrest in modern society and in the late nineteenth century. By basing the aesthetics of the tintypes in this thesis on the Victorian era, I am able to draw these parallels while at the same time making narrative statements about the feelings associated with being an outcast because of my sexuality. This artwork is influenced by other artists, such as the ParkeHarrisons and Cindy Sherman, who use self-portraits in a similar manner, exploring the idea of social identity. By visually representing my feelings of being an outcast, which I believe parallel the feelings of most if not all outcasts, I attempt to make my work accessible to a broad audience, no matter the backgrounds of individual viewers.
