Abstract

My thesis topic is Mayor Ross Luther Lawhon and his time in the office of mayor of North Little Rock, Arkansas. Mr. Lawhon was a major player in getting the city to where it is today. Ross Luther Lawhon was born in Floresvlle, Texas on June 28, 1894. He was the son of Luther Allen and Virginia Worsham Lawhon. He served in World War I as a corporal. Mr. Lawhon came to North Little Rock, Arkansas in 1923 where he stepped into the political atmosphere of the town. He was instrumental in getting the post office of North Little Rock separated from Little Rock's post office. He was both an ordained minister and a graduate of the law school in Little Rock. Of all of these positions the one that he held for the longest was that of mayor of North Little Rock. He served as mayor for six different terms, as well as being, Pulaski County Judge, North Little Rock Postmaster and Legislative Secretary to Governor Harvey Parnell. Mr. Lawhon was a very charismatic leader.
