Abstract
World War II in the Rockies: The Construction of Camp Hale, Colorado is the story of the development of skiing in America, its impact on the United State Army's choice to start training ski/mountain troops, and the subsequent development of Camp Hale, Colorado, where the 10th Mountain Division trained for combat in World War II. A significant amount of attention is given to the choice of Pando, Colorado for the training sight, actual construction, and the unique qualities that Camp Hale brought to army cantonment construction given the time limitation put on the project, the choice of land, initial earth moving work, the high elevation and its impact on workers, racial conflicts, community support from local towns, and the desire for the final product to be as self sustainable as possible.
