Abstract
Data Governance processes, whether informal or formal, are existent in most organizations today. Data governance has become increasingly more important as the size of organizations has increased and enterprise data have become more complex. Poor data quality, poor decision-making, and policy and compliance issues have motivated organizations to explore and implement data governance programs. Organizations seek data governance programs that have clearly defined goals, processes for creating standards and policies, and metrics in place to measure progress. This research will examine data governance's relationship with other data-related disciplines such as data quality and data stewardship. This research introduces the 4P Framework for Data Governance as a tool to help describe the major components of data governance. It uses results from a survey conducted in late 2007 to help describe the major trends in data governance. This research will show the current data governance landscape and the impact potential of implementing a formal program.
