Abstract

Debt was a reoccurring and prominent issue for the lives of Arkansans during the time of Reconstruction, 1862-1874. This thesis is set to help open up and add to the discourse specifically into the history and impact of debt for Arkansas during Reconstruction so as to give a clearer understanding of what the effects of Reconstruction were for Arkansas. The specific primary source data is from microfilm collections with varying amounts of information per county and per year and as such the counties with the most amount of data and consistent amount of years recorded were used. The locations of the counties within Arkansas were also considered to help give a history that encompasses Arkansas. The findings were that debt played an important role in the lives Arkansans economically and socially and also helped set up Arkansas for economic failure later in its history.
