Abstract
The primary focus of my project was to develop an autism-specific training to provide the LRPD Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) an understanding about autism and its associated behaviors including sensory processing disorder and temper tantrums versus meltdowns. This was done by way of a two-part exploratory pilot study. This first part is a needs-assessment to discover the experiences Black autistic men have had encountering law enforcement. The second part, my Autism 101 training plan which is based on the needs assessment determined by survey participants (caregivers of black autistic men) and interviews (more specifically community partner interview with Mallory Visser, LRPD Social Worker). Keywords: autism spectrum disorders, sensory processing disorders, temper tantrums, meltdowns, communication training, community-based partnerships, instructional strategies
