Abstract
This thesis discusses a group that was excommunicated from the Catholic church known as the Army of Mary. The group was founded in 1971 by a Quebec woman named Marie-Paule Giguère. The group formally excommunicated in 2007, which included a group of nuns from Hot Springs, Arkansas known as Our Lady of Charity and Refuge. This thesis will discuss the history of the group, what led to the excommunication of them, and examining how gender and politics both play a role in how the group was handled.
