Abstract

“Nine Months with Elvis” is a coming-of-age travel memoir about a time the author spends as a drummer in a theater company, touring the U.S. and Mexico. The writer, who previously lived a sheltered life, finds he is separated from all that is well-known to him. He documents with humor and pathos the physical miles he travels with the group, along with the personal growth he experiences. Each of the seven chapters takes place in a different geographic locale and centers on an event that prompts this young man to consider the ways he sees himself and how the decisions he makes either limits or enhances his potential-both as a musician and personally. These moments of introspection lead to an increased sense of self, ultimately resulting in the author's growing ‘world-wisdom.’
