Abstract
At the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR), the University Writing Center (UWC) uses an asynchronous emailed-based system for its online writing conferencing. This service has changed little since its original inception. The Blackboard Online Writing Lab (OWL) was developed as a replacement to those services. The Blackboard OWL features both synchronous and asynchronous writing conferences, along with resources such as handouts, videos, slide presentations, and a rich repository of online web tools. An update to UALR UWC's online services is important because higher education is moving toward increased and faster paced distance learning, and it may become even more challenging for on-campus writing centers to continue providing their services to all members of their campus community. It is my goal that synchronous, online writing conferences using Blackboard, Blackboard Collaborate, and Blackboard Community will offer students, who would otherwise not be able to visit the University Writing Center, the same experience students receive when they walk into the on-campus, face-to-face writing center.
