Abstract
Among the most important issues women have experienced is the lack of equality between the genders. In the 1970s women were close to achieving the equal opportunity they had been fighting for. The creation of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) was one of the most contentious issues of the time. This was no different in Arkansas as evidenced by the local opinions expressed in the many letters received by Governor Dale Bumpers. The opinions were overwhelmingly opposed to the ratification of the ERA. In the end the voices of its citizens were heard. Arkansas would not ratify this ERA.
